My wife and I live on the coast of South Carolina, and we decided a few years back to build our own house. We had never built a house, and were definitely in for an interesting experience. When you build your house, it will be a good idea to have a checklist of things to look for during construction. Here is one such list of items.

Get out there! This is your house, so get involved, and look astatine the house as it is being framed! You may non understand construction, but you can look at Read the rest of this entry »

Which Wood is Best for Log Home Construction?

Much has been written about which wood species is best for lumber home construction. In this clause I will draw on fifteen years experience to excuse the pros and cons of some of the common wood species used commercially for logarithm cabin construction.

Lodge pole pine is probably one of the most common and widely used wood species for logarithm wall construction. It tends to be straight with low taper due to the slow growth associated with the dry mood where it is found. It Read the rest of this entry »

The east of England has the driest mood in the British Isles and in 2012 the regime have already had to impose hosepipe bans and conservation of water. The area also became wealthy from the production of wool in the middle ages. As a result, a number of elegant, wooden houses were reinforced to show off the wealth of the landowners.

In Coggeshall, Essex, there is Paycockes. This beautiful house was built as a wedding present from a wealthy merchandiser for his son in the sixteenth century. Inside the house is paneled and the garden is Read the rest of this entry »

Blythewood, South Carolina is a suburban area of Columbia about 10 miles north on Interstate 77 toward Charlotte. It has earned the repute of class, community, and speedy growth. Yet, community members still remain hesitant to new subdivisions and non traditional growth. Even with this resistance, new Blythewood neighborhoods have wedged their “foot in the door” and ar meeting the demand for Columbia residents relocating from outside the city. Newcomers ar discovering Blythewood as a low key, country-like atmosphere. Some of the “new” neighborhoods were antecedently approved by local developers and have been taken over by national homebuilders. Though Read the rest of this entry »

This is a good question, and one that definitely deserves paying attention to. Using the wrong products on wood studs inside of walls can cause major wellness problems and in the worst case even death. I know that sounds extreme but I have personally had experience with a home that was built by a do-it-yourselfer who thought if helium used all pressure treated lumber in the walls that his house would never rot. Well, the house didn’t rot, but it did stink like poison, and the owner/builder finally died of brain tumors related to over exposure of the toxic Read the rest of this entry »

It’s non common to find discredited cap trusses when building a new house, but every once in a while you will run into a job where a truss has been damaged or even destroyed. This could hold up the final buildings completion date if not taken care of, immediately.

Here’s a little advice from an experient building and frame contractor. I cut one truss, while installing a stairwell for a two-story room addition and it held the job up for one month. The building examiner wouldn’t sign off the house frame or let me continue working Read the rest of this entry »

Currently, one of the most common stair remodeling endeavors is installing replacement stair treads manufactured out of a wood species that matches the new hardwood flooring that was just installed during the remodeling project. In many instances, particularly in older and historic saving homes, the wood stair will require custom stair treads to be manufactured to the architect’s or contractor’s specifications as far as thickness, width, length, radius (if curved) and return molding on the left, right, or both sides for any uncovered edges. Pie shaped or triangle treads ar used for winder stairs. Custom steps for new construction Read the rest of this entry »

I would imagine most people don’t even know what it wood step cleat is, in construction we have so many words that describe the same thing. A step cleat is another(a) word for a thread bracket.
